I went to the pound to get a dog yesterday, the supervisor there told me a story about an adoptee. They have a beautiful bull dog there that an elderly woman saw dumped in an empty lot. The elderly woman tried to get this dog to come with her but the dog refused as he was waiting for his owner. The woman came to the dog for 7 days to bring him food in the empty lot. The dog would not budge or leave the area he was dropped off at. How loyal was that??? She ended up calling to get him picked up. This poor dog was heartbroken=(.

I adopted Roxy because she was smaller, and easier for me to care for, but I sure felt sorry for this other dog.

The fact of the matter is, there are some really cruel and selfish people out there who don't think twice about dumping a pet. Unlike normal, decent folk who see a beloved pet as a member of the family, these other people just see their pet as property not unlike a piece of furniture. It's very sad when you consider how loyal pets can be.

My own cat was a stray who came to us very thin and unkempt. That was fourteen years ago and it still makes my blood boil to think someone dumped her. However, at least she found a loving home for herself and, unfortunately, not all abandoned animals find the same. I think that's why it's time we brought back licensing and checks so if you dumped an animal, you are made to face consequences such a hefty fine.

That is so sad...I don't understand how anyone could do that. People have excuses like "well, I'm getting kids now" or "oh, had to move", but unless you suddenly develop a very deadly allergy to pet dander or you are escaping a flash flood (even then take the dog with you if you can!) There is really no excuse for leaving a dog. Dogs become part of your family, and even if the owners don't think of them that way, they think of themselves that way! Even if they have to make way for a kid or live in a small apartment, they'll be happy as long as they're with their "pack". And if anyone really does have to leave a dog, with whatever excuses they console themselves, they have to take it to a shelter where at least it will be taken care of and maybe find a new home!

Sorry, I guess I didn't answer your question, but in my mind there's no answer anyone could give that's a real reason. People are just unfeeling, and people who abandon dogs should never have had one in the first place.

Well if the lady was that observant why didn't she write the license plate number down and report them to the police for abandoning the dog.

Those kinds of people need to be taken out in the desert and given a thimble full of water and a car door that they can carry around and roll the window down if they get hot and sent packing with the nearest town 100 miles a way..
.
You take an animal home you are responsible for it like it or not. If you don't want to take care of it take it to an animal shelter so it at least has a chance.

You are so very right, my folks live outside the city and people dump their cats and dogs off a lot.
It is a real pain. People caught doing it should go to jail and then be made to help in a animal shelter. Maybe they do it so they don't have to deal with a pets death. A quick death is more humane than starving or being hit by a car.

Most of the time, people are moving and don't want to be seen as "mean", so they won't take it to a facility that will take it in, such as a shelter. Other people dump a dog if it was diagnosed w/ a disease and the owners don't want the hassel to take care of it anymore. Sometimes, people just want to get rid of it and get another, mostly a younger dog or puppy.

That is truely a sad story .... I think perhaps in many cases the dog is to smart for the owner . ... the owner becomes frustrated .
*dogs are a lot smarter than most give credit for

* I hope the pound finds the pooch a good home

Perhaps they had a child that was allergic.
Maybe they lost their jobs, had to sell their home and live somewhere dogs were not allowed.
Maybe he is sick and they can't afford to pay for treatment?
The owner passed away?

I am not saying it is right - they should have found the dog a good home first. But I am sure there are several different reasons.

Some people are f**king worthless, that's why! They'll often see a puppy or kitten and decide to take it home because it's cute. They eventually come to realize that puppies and kittens grow into dogs and cats and that they are a major responsibility. And unfortunately, these people don't have enough character to step up to the plate and take responsibility for the care of the animal.

People are not responsible for much anymore they refuse to stand up and take responsibility for things they do or do not do.
Dogs or rather pets in todays society have become disposable.
Years aog when you had a pet it was a comitment for the life of that pet and people worked harder to make it work. now people are busier with everything else and do not take time to train a dog or spend time with it and instead of working out the problem they just dispose of the problem.

People are often very irresponsible, and don't think of an animal as being a live, lovimg, loyal, dependent creature.
I think that is so sad. My dogs are such loyal and loving companions. I couldn't imagine abandoning them.
There were people in Katrina who wouldn't go to shelters, since they couldn't take their pets. I understand. I wouldn't leave mine, either. They are like family.
Of course, I take very good care of them and wouldn't put them in the situation of being abandoned in an emergency. If I couldn't take care of them, I wouldn't get them in the first place.
