I am a recent college graduate, I live in Northern New Jersey, and I have not taken the civil service test yet. How do I find a police department that is hiring, I want to apply for a job. I have a BA in sociology and I served an internship with the New Jersey State Police. I am not interested in working for the NYPD which many people have already suggested to me, but thank you.

I appreciate everyone that contributes but I should also note that I would like to remain close to my family, such as NJ, NY, PA. Thanks

Find an official city web site. Check out the "Job Openings" or "Personnel Dept" (or Human Services) web pages within these sites. Sometimes a city Police Dept will have it's own Job Openings/Personnel page as well. Sometimes there is no personnel or job openings page. They may not post them online or just when there's an opening. So just give the city a call and see how you can find out about job openings

Here's an example:

Paterson, NJ

I couldn't find job openings but there's contact information for the Human Resources Officer. Write and ask how to find out and apply for jobs.

There's a great listing of links to local government in New Jersey here:

Good luck

Bill

How would you feel about moving to Webster County, MO? Our sheriffs dept is always hiring, however, if you're educated and straight laced you may have problems getting hired on due to the fact that our sheriffs dept. has been under the scrutiny of the AGs office and our sheriff removed, some of our cops have been arrested for mostly sex crimes, law enforcement is a joke. If you want to dodge bullets go for something on at least a state level that isn't politically run, the highway patrol would be the best place to start, in any state.
