About 8 weeks is a good time to start short walks with the dog on a leash, by 12 weeks he should be able to do the whole bock with you.

You'll want your dog to have had his first round of shots at minimum. Ideally, it's best to wait until they've had their rabies vaccine (3-6 months). Just because you don't come across other dogs on your walk won't mean that your puppy won't come into contact with contaminated debris on the ground.
If you want to leash train, start by putting the pup on a leash and walking him around your back yard or patio. It will help him get used to the leash and give him (and you!) some exercise.

It's best to wait until he's had his first vaccinations otherwise he can pick up a nasty virus from any unvaccinated dogs who happen to be in the area. You can, however, carry him around the block just to expose him to different sights and sounds at an early age thus improving his socialisation skills. Just don't put him down if you do this.

The sooner you leash train the better, you my end up doing more pulling and guiding but after 8-10 weeks they understand you.

As long as he has his first round of vaccinations, it should be no problem at any age.
