what do you think? We should use two volunteers from each religion, includeing two atheists, and we induce death like they did in the movie Flatliners. Then, after a couple minutes, bring them back and see what they have to say about being dead.

I would do it!

By the way, you may enjoy the book Spook by Mary Roach, in which she researches people's attempts to determine whether there actually is an afterlife.

There are a few problems with your premise... first of all, you say "...two volunteers from each religion, including two atheists..." please let me remind you that atheism is NOT a religion.

Secondly, if someone is actually dead... total loss of brain activity, then sorry, there is no bringing them back. NDEs are not an acceptable test for an afterlife since there is still brain activity that can account for the visions and experiences after so called death.

The truth is we will never know for sure. But i am willing to bet that after death, there is nothing.

Due to recent advancements in medical technology, many have gone through a Near Death Experience whereby they were clinically dead for a time and then came back. You don't need to have an experiment to verify this. All you have to do is some research into NDE's.

No need to waste your time. When Lazarus was ressurrected by Jesus he said nothing about an afterworld. The bible says when you are dead you are conscience of nothing. You are sleeping in death. You have no thoughts, feelings, pain... Ecc 9:5. And the lazarus account is at John 11:11-14.

That sort of experimentation violates experimental ethics.. and the result will have no significant value.

What would You do if an afterlife was scientifically proved?

Would you take proof of an afterlife as validation any or all religious points of view?

Would there be new professions like, afterlife coach? post death counsellor? HeavenHouse(TM) real estate agents?

knowledge, meet faith. faith, knowledge. (a favorite movie of mine, btw) just an aside note, as in the movie, what might they bring BACK with them? ominous warning: "some lines shouldn't be crossed"

after bringing them back, what would you expect them to say? even if they all perceived the same thing, each would describe it according to their beliefs, wouldn't you think? whether there were 72 virgins, a bright white light, nirvana, pearly gates, or nothing at all, each would likely come back with knowledge that fit in with their belief systems.

the idea is intriguing... would you put it forth to try and prove, or disprove the existence of an afterlife? semantics yes, but just imagine the potential funding sources one way vs. the other...

I actually have thought about that before. Its a great movie. I think your idea sounds great. I don't think you could get very many people to actually go along with it and you would need more than two people for it to be an actual study.

What if those in the afterlife know that you are just doing an experiment and they don't reveal anything until the person dies for good?

It would prove nothing, other than the lack of ethics in psychology experiments.

Would you jeopardize peoples lives because of what you saw in a movie? Just so they could tell you what they hallucinated???
