No, Ely will respond to the "I" (eye) sound in his name, while Baley will respond to the "E" (ee) sound in his name.

totally different
BTW i love those names!

unless Ely is pronounced (EeeLee) then it would be confusing.

I don't think it will be hard or confusing for either dog. Your dog Ely already knows his name, so hearing a new name will not cause him to forget his. The new puppy shouldn't have any trouble learning his as long as you make it obvious that it is his name.

I have a 9 year old golden retriever and a 2 year old golden retriever, Riley and Duggan, respectively. Riley has never had a problem with his name, and neither has Duggan. Duggan may come when we call Riley, but that is only because he doesn't want to be left out of whatever is going on.

If you are still concerned, the best way to get a puppy to recognize his name is to use it while you are training him, praising him, doing anything with him, and he will understand eventually you are talking about and to him.

Good luck with the puppy, and don't forget to make time specifically for Ely and you once you have the puppy - that way Ely doesn't feel pushed aside. :-)

I would think so, the second syllable is much too close.
