I can take speed, aperature or manual pictures with digital. Has a modest 2-3x telephoto. What would a good (approximate) setting to capture lightning bugs in the backyard? I'm having no luck. Too dark or too bright.

(F2 -F8), speed 1/1000 to 8 sec. Sony DSC S85.

Are you trying to get them flying? If you are, good luck. You will have better luck getting them stationary maybe on a leaf. Catch one and place it in the refrigerator for a few minutes...it will slow them down (but it might also decrease the chemical reaction of the firefly.

This seems like a real "luck" shot. I would try to push the ASA to 800 get the shutter speed to about 60th at f/4 and see how you do.
Good Luck

You will do MUCH better adding the fireflies to an existing image that you like with a retouching program like Photoshop.

When the sun is red behind a hill, and several fireflies are there, and one is lit. Real rural-like
