Go to an obedience class or read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
What All Good Dogs Should Know – Volhard http://www.volhard.com/
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

Your dog is probably behaving perfectly normally for a dog. Look for qualified help, not some guy down the road who speaks like he knows what he's doing. Contact the Association of Pet Dog Trainers at www.apdt.com and to find a trainer in your area. The apdt is the largest organization of dog training instructors who are dedicated to ethical, workable methods in the world. A well trained dog is a joy. Good luck.

Either an obedience class OR you can put your own time and effort into doing research (internet AND library, not just the internet--anyone can post any crappy training advice on the internet and you have no idea whether or not they actually know what they're talking about until you know something about training yourself).

In learning to train my coonhound, I've probably read about 6 books and spent hours on the internet researching in the past few months and invested quite a bit of time and energy into deciding on the best training method (I've chosen clicker training which is a wonderful method, especially for dogs who are hard to train or independent).

Training is a set of skills, both theory and practical. You need to know what you're doing, when to do it, and have a good sense of timing.
Obediance classes are supposed to teach all this; if the one you end up with is no fun and you're not getting anywhere after 12 weeks, try another.
You'll do better learning by example than from a book. But if there are no classes near you, visit the library or the website below.

crikey! you have a badly behaved labrador? thats a first! did you not train him properly? Labs are very food motivated. Take him to classes with an APDT trainer. They teach through positive rein-forcement. There is a list in The Association of Pet Dog Trainers site of all their registered trainers. Find your local one and give them a call!

You need to take control by showing the dog who is the boss, If the problem is training then look for a local obedience class if the problem is behavioural then look up information on the Internet there is plenty out there. If you want more help please feel free to contact me through messenger and give me more details of the problems your experiencing i maybe able to point you in the right direction.

What are you wanting to teach.
For basic obedience try a class at your local Petsmart or the humane society may have some. Taking a class will teach your dog to look to your for guidence in a busy situation and he will learn to listen to you.
For other things you can work one on one with a behavorial trainer to teach you how to teach the dog not do something.
I work mostly one on one with my clients unless we are doing a demonstration for the rescue group.

Paitence, a good dog training school will help you both. It is not just the dog's fault if they are badly behaved, so suck it up and admit it is your fault also and things will start to get better.
