I work on computers and have used AVG, by Grisoft, for the last three years with NO problems what so ever. I like the fact that it updates itself almost every time I turn on my computer and it's free to home users. Using AVG incombination with Ad Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, keeps my computers running really fast.

I've used plenty of different ones, McAfee, Norton, AVG, F-Prot, and a bunch of others.
Personally, I like AVG Free because it's free to download and update, and it catches just as many viruses as McAffee and Norton. Plus it doesn't take up tons of space and is very simple to install, update, and use.

Trend Micro's PC-Cillian.
When I first switched over - I ran Norton & PC-Cillian concurrently and PC-cillian notified me of virus outbreaks prior to Norton as well as found things that Norton failed to. I also find it easy to install and customize.
