Any jain friends out there who can suggest some solution?

You can buy sonic pest control units that give out a sound that only the rats can hear and they hate it and run away, My neighbour had a similar thing to keep cats out of her garden as they kept doing their business on her vegetable patch...it worked too.

Unfortunately, it's either or. You can kill the rats or live with them. Aside from the diseases they carry, the droppings, and the possibility of rabid rodents that will attack, they're actually quite cute.

They are pests everywhere they go, you'd be a fool not to want to kill them.
If you drove them away they'd just go and bugger someone else, the friendliest option really is to kill the buggers.

Lay down some exlax chocolate chews. Try cotton balls with peppermint oil.

Eliminate food, water and access. You can't drive them away, but without these three elements, they are history!
