Almost all dogs can swim but many hate to.
I train my hunting dogs by taking them to the river and working them on the boat ramp. They can walk out in to the water and still touch the ground on the ramp and I throw a floating toy in and see if they will get it. Most learn to play fetch with the toy first and then move on to swimming about 6 months or so. Most will go after it and bring it back as they already know they aresupposed to give the toy back.
I have one who saw me throw the toy in and ran to the end of the dock jumped in and got the toy and swam back. Then got on thedock and went back to the end and jumped off again on her own with no toy out. She likes to swim and loves water.

not every dog is meant to be a good swimmer. Take him to a pool or lake and let him walk in the water and try it out himself. Try throwing a ball out into the water and see if he tried to go after it.

I have 4 dogs, and 2 of them love the water, and the other two just like to stand on shore and drink it. They really don't enjoy swimming, though they CAN do it.

Dogs know instinctively how to swim, but the best thing to do is to take your dog to the water where there are other swimming dogs. Although you're dog will know what to do, he will feel more confident seeing other pups in the water and he will mimic the better swimmers.

you dont have to teach a dog to swim, they just can

why do you think they call it doggie paddle

when we took our pup to the lake for the first time he was a little hesitant, but when we got in the water, he followed right along, and now he'll go right in, even without us, he loves it.

My friend did this... you pretty much have to own a pool or go to one daily. Don't ever force them in the water or you will ruin the chance. They will always be afraid of the water after that. Try to get them on the first step on their own will. USe a toy or something. Then slowly get them further until you can just throw a ball in the water and they will jump in after it. Some breeds hate water and will never go in it though.

Take him out in a boat and just throw him into the water. That's how my dad taught me to swim. It was easy once I got out of the bag.

We had to throw ours in once and now he loves it. Of course the first time is hard because you feel really bad because they're scared but it's well worth it once they see that they can swim and it's a great way to get them excersize.
