Serious lack of imagination

I am the fourth consecutive son with the same name (IV). I gave my son the same name so he is the fifth (V).

I see it as a tie to the past. Men have the traditional luck to be the ones to "carry on the name" for their ancestors. By carrying on the name, I felt I was investing a legacy in my son, letting him know that I was proud to have him be the next in our family line.

My only worry was that I'd have two boys, and the second might ask "why did HE get your name?" but that didn't happen in my case.

My husband is a Charles the fourth. I refused to name my son Charles and he was okay with that. I think that men choose to name their children after them as a statement. That statement being that child truly belongs to them. Another answer would be a family tradition which was true in my husbands case. I personally think by linking a child to it's father or mother with a name you set a expectation for that child to be like that person instead of themselves. Which is why I would not name my child after his father.

It is a way to carry on their names and genetics. Keep the family name alive and well that type of thing.

i think they just want a mini them...but i dont like it. they are already carrying their last name on, plus i think they should have their own identity in a name..not their fathers. i say if they really must have, throw it in as a middle name and give the boy his own name! hahaha!
