Medication also rarely cures depression. Are you getting therapy to go along with it?

I've been on various anti-depressants, a few seemed like they may have been helping, but the side effects canceled out any positives.

I found St. John's wort to work wonders. I can't be certain if it would have worked as well had I not been on SSRIs prior to taking it.

SSRIs cause new brain cells in the hippocampus, a portion of the brain that regulates brain chemicals. Even if I had the extra brain cells, I didn't see a change; I think maybe the St. John's wort sort of kick started my brain into working right.

Randy, unless you are suicidal, I don't think I would jump into ECT. My problem is they don't know why it works. And it only works for awhile. I am also not a big fan of meds. The effects don't last long and they mess up your brain. I am OK with anti-anxiety meds for emergencies, but that's it. First I think you should read Feeling Good by Dr Burns. Then I would look into a Cognative behavioral therapist. I have had good results with it. I don't agree with the chemical impalance theory of depression. Every single person I know with depression has REAL problems that have to be fixed. I don't think being upset because you have a problem means you are mentally ill. You need to deal with the problem. Depression is just a symptom. Best wishes for you Joe

There is no defined "cure" for depression, but many things that have proven to work in different situations. Ultimately, every human being is different (or it is possible you are misdiagnosed). Anti-depressants, ECT and other methods do work for many individuals...though ECT should always be a last resort. Of course, individual therapy can also do wonders...Unfortunately, there is not a guaranteed cure. I wish you the best and sure wouldn't give up on it.

Those drugs do not cure you, but just make you feel better.

Depression for some people is a lifelong illness that requires medication treatment, you may be one of those people.

Try doing therapy. The drugs only work for some people. ECT can actually cause more damage according to studies we read in my classes.
