To preempt the 'it says so in the bible' answers which you are going to give anyway....
If god is so massive and powerful and beyond comprehension, even if he were to speak directly to people, people would still completely screw it up. People have 1000s of interpretations of this 'god' character and none of them agree. Isn't this proof that none of your religions could be right? If god were able to communicate his desires for humanity, wouldn't he find a much more practical way than telling various cultures around the world a bunch of contradictory information?

Besides, the to answer "because the Bible says so" is begging the question.

On another note, I've noticed a few haven't read the question or are just too ignorant to know what you meant by "To preempt the 'it says so in the bible' answers..."

My opinion is the people you are talking about are such idiots they don't even believe what they say they do.

God, FYI, is not a character. Maybe you really should read the Bible to provide yourself with a bit more knowledge, because those who truly do love God and who truly know him wouldn't speak about him this way. I believe your screenname contradicts YOU. I WONT sit here and bash you for your insults as much as I would love to. God says in the Bible there is one true God, and there are many religions. YOU CAN PURSUE ANY RELIGION YOU WANT, as long as GOD, the one true God, is the focal point of the religion and you believe in Salvation, and salvation is taught through the religion. The end times are seriously right around the corner, although if you read the Bible you will see reasoning as to why I say this. Revelations is what you should read, to see what this world is coming to and what is going to happen, whether you believe it or not. And if God did speak directly to people, yes, your right, people would still mess up, because we were born sinners and therefore SIN. Which is why you need Salvation to redeem youself and you can only find that by asking God for forgiveness for all you sins, and asking him to come into your heart. Its that simple. Believing in him is forever, and asking him to come into your heart is a 1 time thing you will only need to do once. But its so important. Here on earth, Satan owns our souls. Until we repent, so it will go. I suggest you seriously read the Bible a bit more and don't question, just believe.

The ones closest to god probably never read the bible. We were created as creators and that simple concept is far beyond comprehension to those who are being controlled by the subtle and perfected mind manipulation. How can you say the bible has all the answers. You werent there when it was wrote. Personal experience seems to be the key to how your reality ir formed. If you ever really wanted to know what the bible was about at all....You need to check some outside sources.

"God" is not that far beyond our understanding. Most of us at some point reach a decision of who or what "God" is or is not. People's claim of knowledge isn't about a man but rather a religion, belief or book that they have accepted as truth. Most people know enough about the bible to know that it says that God is love. If you accept that as truth, then this one verse should be enough to live by.

"Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not want what belongs to others. It does not brag. It is not proud. It is not rude. It does not look out for its own interests. It does not easily become angry. It does not keep track of other people's wrongs. Love is not happy with evil; but it is full of joy when the truth is spoken. It always protects. It always trusts. It always hopes. It never gives up. Love never fails" (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a).

If you do not agree with that then here are definitions from the dictionary.

"A deep and tender feeling of affection for or attachment or devotion to a person or persons."

"A feeling of brotherhood and good will toward other people."

No matter what one believes both have good actions to practice.

If God was so far beyond our comprehension that, even when we thought we knew a lot about Him, we still knew next to nothing, wouldn't "(p)eople have 1000s of interpretations of this 'god' character and none of them agree"? All we know is what we find in the Bible. Beyond that, we're only human and we'll only know bits and pieces until God thinks it's the time for us to understand!

The answer to your question is pretty much in your question.

Yes, God is beyond our complete understanding. Our minds are finite, like we have computers in our skulls that can only fit so much information. God, on the other hand, is infinite, meaning forever, without end. This little comparison hopefull helps in explaining the difference, why we do not have the ability to totally and completely understand all of God.

As far as all the different cultures and religions, God revealed himself in the person of Jesus Christ. If anyone wants to get to know Him, they need only look to the gospels and to Christ's Church.

The reason for the different interpretations are about as many as there are people. Not because God did this, but because people took what He gave them and misused it, or didn't understand it, or whatever the case.

Look to God's early Church for you answers. You'll be glad you did.

God bless,

Danny

Whether we as Christians tell you any other way,you will only be hypocritical regardless. If you never had a personal relationship with him or tried then God is so far beyond your understanding therefore where a little child understands clearly. It's not about man made religions but Only a personal thing. God is not contradictory nor is his words. Only man's thoughts are twisted towards him and his thoughts.

God has been very clear in revealing Himself to humanity. What gets jumbled up and sounding contradictory is the finite mind trying to take in something is has no context for. And He still reveals himself to people, especially those who are joined to Him by the Holy Spirit. Then there is a context.

well, look at it this way....

is it possible to know EVERYTHING about EVERY facet of science?

does anyone know every single little detail about chemistry, physics, astronomy, thermodynamics, hydraulics, mechanics, botany, physiology, psychology, cognitive science, computer science, metallurgy, ecology, hydrology and zoology?

of course not! that doesn't mean there aren't complete geniuses in each of those categories and perhaps a few people who are exceptionally gifted in each of them.

yet even someone with only a modicum of scientific learning can often tell when someone really knows what they're talking about - or if not, it's fairly easy to check the facts.

unfortunately, people tend to believe that it's not possible to do the same with spiritual matters. a couple of tips -

1. you can tell if someone is close to god by how they behave. if they aren't loving, they're not that close and everything they say about god becomes suspect.

2. people are inherently prone to become egotistical when they DO get a little access to privileged information. this is known as vanity and no one is immune to its effects. you can usually tell when somone is someone is mired in vanity because you get the feeling that they've got a "holier than thou" attitude.

3. sometimes we feel others have a "holier than thou" attitude and in actuality it is simply our tendency to ignore correction that is blinding us to the true reality of the situation.

4. it is almost always necessary to get more than one opinion on whether what someone says it true actually is, and when you stop thinking that you need to check with someone else, that's when you're in the most danger of losing humility.

Exactly.

Heck, the "the bible says so" crowd doesn't know for sure that the god that gave them the bible isn't just some bored superbeing that loves all the crap that our race has gone through because of the "holy book."
