It is totally unfair to the animal. Pets need vet care, including dental. Besides shots and check ups they get ill and they get injured. Pets will need a vet.

Its this idea of having what everyone else has got,a status symbol. They also think that once they have a pet, thats it! No long term planning, thought, nothing! We live in an I WANT world! Are they that ignorant, to think that pets do not get sick?Pets will depend on you throughout its life, and with proper care may live 15 years or more. Are they willing and able to care properly for it and provide a stable home for that long? An astonishingly high percentage of pets change owners at least once in their lifetimes, and that does not count those that didn't make it out of the shelter.
They get a pet without prior budgeting for vet visits and other costs. Normal veterinary care includes yearly shots and boosters, tests for worms, and examination for typical diseases as needed. This will run into hundreds of pounds or dollars a year. This, of course, depends on your vet and on the health of the pet. Preventive and consistent care is less expensive in the long run.
If they cannot afford veterinary care for their pet they should not get one. Do not think that you can get a pet and never see the vet. Annual shots and examinations are a must for keeping your pet healthy; certain vaccinations are required by law in different areas.
Other routine costs include pet food, litter pans and scoops, and other pet paraphernalia.
You are right,it IS very unfair to the animal indeed. Most people KNOW they cannot afford an animal, they KNOW their financial position,so I say,IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD AN ANIMAL, DON'T GET ONE! VET CARE IS A MUST!!!

If the dog just has a minor problem, then i will put it off until all my regular bills are paid. If it is a serious emergency, that is why i have a credit card. Legit Akita Rottweiler 2 Dobermans Bullmastiff Miniature Pinscher Carolina Dog Mutt I also have a cat and four horses, i have had situations in which more than one animal required emergency treatment and thanks to the credit card and money saved i was able to deal with them. I don't have insurance or a savings account dedicated to my animals, i just have general savings that i can go into when a situation comes up. I would never go without a necessity like heat or electricity for my animals but i would cut back on a few luxuries if it meant them living or dying.

Some people really don't understand the amount of care (and cash) it requires to keep a pet healthy and happy until it's too late...

Totally.
That's why I don't understand why people want "Free or cheap" animals-- it's like, no matter how much you pay for teh dog, it's always going to be expensive when it comes to vet bills.

Often people will get a puppy or even a dog on impulse. "It's so cute" "I want a dog" without really understanding the commitments-financial, emotional, and time consuming. They think that the animal will fit into their lifestyle, when in reality, people need to change their lifestyle, routines, priorities to meet that of the pet. Too often, people cop out and just "get rid of the dog" because they don't want to deal with the day to day obligations and financial responsibility. That sucks. The poor dogs are the ones who get **** on.

Exactly, and many people ask for advice here because they cant afford a vet.
Is it lack of knowledge or stupidity?

well, its the same as saying "why do people buy cars and cant afford them" or "why do couples have a child and cant afford it" cause it bring the person happiness and you cant say anything to anyone to make them change their mind. if you feel this strongly towards this subject, get into PITA. hell, i cant afford a $400 vet bill every year for check up's and teeth cleaning. thats why they make food and chew toys with nutirents and teeth cleaning scrubbies. also, dont be worried about that, atleast people love their animals, attack those that fight their animals till they die. now that is cruel. dont be so negative towards love. get those people who kick their animals and starve them and use them as bait and fighting. now theres a media to target.

Because the thrill of having a cute little puppy overshadows the very real need to provide care for it. Everyone likes a puppy until it poops on them, or needs a $100 set of shots.
