A cup is smaller in size and appropriate for serving tea. A cup always comes with a saucer. A mug is bigger and cylinder shaped. It is also bulkier than a cup normally. Good for serving coffee.

There is a world of difference between a cup and a mug. Personally I can only drink tea out of a thin china cup!
A mug is usually cylindrical and is the same circumference all the way up, it is made of a thicker ceramic. A cup is narrow at the bottom and widens towards the top. A cup has a matching saucer to hold the tea spoon and a biscuit.
