I'm not a history teacher but I can give you the jest of it. After world war II when Hitler was defeated, the united nations took a strip of land, now called Israel from the Arab nations and gave it to the Jews for their own country. The land is considered holy land by both the Jews and the Muslims and ever since then they have fought non stop over who should occupy the holy land. The Arab nations think that Israel doesn't have the right to exist. And apparently later on there was a conflict between the Palestine's and Israel because Israel took the Gaza strip of land that the Palestine's controlled for Israel. Israel has recently given it back to them but the fighting will probably never stop.

I just love how people really RESEARCH their answers in here. To that end I'll try to answer you as realistically as I can...After WWII the United Nations had a problem...What to do with all the Jewish refugees in Europe (the European nations refused to reabsorb them back into their populations)? The British had an area loosly called Palestine (a mandate from WWI) and offered it up as a solution. The Jews accepted and formed the State of Israel offering their Arabic bretheren the opportunity to live in peace and be citizens in the new State. The Arabs decided that they'd rather not live in peace and became refugees (that weren't readily accepted by the neighboring nations Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, etc...In fact to be a Palestinian was likened to being a PIG...so they were treated like dirt by their own...something they always forget).
Jews, Christians, and more recently Muslims all consider Jerusalem a Holy City. Up till the formation of Israel...Jerusalem had virtually no meaning at all to the Muslims...their two principal sites being Mecca and Medina which I am sure you've heard of. Bottom line is that the Muslims want to restore the "Holy" city to their control and that's what it's about. PEACE!

Without going into the long history between the Jews and Arabs we can discuss the current situation. Israel withdrew its settlers from a mainly Palestinian area called Gaza. The Palestinians saw this as a success on the part of their new polictical/militant party Hamas. So they elected Hamas to govern them. Islamic radicals within Gaza raided an Israeli military post and captured soldier Gilad Shalit. He is being held by Hamas. Israel demands his return. Israel is moving into Gaza to fight now.
Meanwhile in the north, Hezbollah (an Iranian sponsored militant/political group) decided to do the same thing and captured a few more soldiers. Israel has started bombing Lebanon where Hezbollah operate from as a result of that provocation.
There are many more facets to the conflict. It has become central to the War on Terror and the fight against radical Islam.
