Honda Civic Hatchback, 5spd, probably a 1994 - 1998. Or maybe a Honda CRX, 5spd (don't think there's an auto), 1989-1991. Both are reliable, good on gas and the parts are easy to find if you need to fix them or if you want to upgrade them (performance parts/ accessories)

I had a 99 ford contour for commuting to and from work (50mi each way). got it with 100k miles on it for $1000 bucks, used 100 more dollars to tint the windows so no one could see me and it's been running strong ever since.

$1100 bucks = good reliable car with $3400 to spare

You can't go wrong with a Honda Del Sol, sporty, quick, and small. I get about 36 mpg if not more. Most of them are convertible too!
