Depends on the age of the kids. Once I bought different colors of felt and cut them into various shapes, and covered a piece of cardboard with a piece of felt. This gave my son a kind of sculpture on his lap for long trips. The pieces of felt went into ziploc bags into a shoe box.
Anything to do with their hands on an individual basis (not hitting or poking each other) will help keep them busy. Some kids get motion sick if they try to read in a moving vehicle.
Do you know the "I'm a little striped skunk" song or other traveling songs?
How about keeping tabs of how many license plates from other states they see?
There are some good books on different travel activities - check a local bookstore.

You can use a portable DVD player, you can let them use game devices. I used the cheap walmart kind that had 2-3 games and got a few diffrent ones. We also play name the 50 states with license plates. Yes you can find Hawaii and Alaska they are just harder. You can play I spy. When we were going to South Carolina we counted the South of the Border signs, because there were so many. I can't read in a car without getting sick so I had to do things that made me look out the window and not stare down for long. Have a fun and memorable trip. Oh yah we always stoped a few times at something that looked good and was unplanned just to break up the driving.

the alphabet game. Find words that start with the letters of the alphabet in order. QXZ can be in a word, the car doesn't count. Make up other rules. Or, "on this trip, I'm going to take......." choose anything that starts with "A" and go to the next person and they start saying "on this trip, I'm going to take.....(what ever word that first person said for A) and then what ever they think of for the letter B and so no. Keep it clean with young kids, use animals and things kids can think of. Do this until the letter Z. It also works up their memory and thought skills.

well my brother and i have gameboys, and they are a lot of fun and keep you entertained for a long time. Also try to get a portable D.V.D player, they are only about a hundred dollars for one, and sometimes you can get a good deal on one. Here's another suggestion, bring some cheap playing cards and get some easy games if the kids are younger, get card games like, old maid, go fish and so many more. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!

No video games in any respect, France has a very superb united states of america component, i could desire to computer screen it circulate with the aid of for hours! it could be somewhat cool in case you found out slightly approximately your course and coach the youngsters some stuff as you circulate!!! Im particularly useful they'll style them selves out, young ones are particularly clever in recent times. Failing that the action will deliver them to sleep so as that they wont want to play energetic video games. the journey house is the toughy. only have some thing they'll look ahead to at the two ends. sturdy success.

If you can't afford the hand held games or mp3 players for the children, try buying nickelodeon, neopets, highlights, Disney, or other children magazines. Even if they are not old enough to read, they love looking at the pictures. Also try cross word puzzles, and coloring books. I hope some or all of these things are quite helpful to you. Have fun.

I hate to say this, because I don't even own a home system, but the only eay I make the fourteen hour trip to my parents with my kids is handheld video games, when they start whining, fighting or being a pest, I break them out.

Tie the children to the top of the vehicle, and give them red capes and goggles. Every once in a while, spray them with wiper fluid for "rain" fun. Make them smile and catch bugs in their teeth. The child with the most bugs caught, gets the "bonus" prize, a drag behind the vehicle in a leather suit and helmet until it wears through (wouldn't want any injuries).

We used to play some kind of game with car tags. I believe it was car tag poker. Use the numbers and letters as your hand in poker. Or try to make words from the letters.
Also we wrote down all the state tags we used to see, to count how many we could see.
Then of course there was the tongue twisters.
This was a particular favorite. .
She sells sea shells by the sea shore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore,
I'm sure she sells seashore shells

If you don't have DVDs and Playstation, try keeping a list of the license plates you see (each state). Show them how to read the map. Stop often (that's a given). Sing. Tell them about your childhood trips.
