We don't actually know for sure that people lived for "centuries" as we know them. Civilizations back then may have measured time and space differently. After all, Genesis indicates that God created the world in 7 days; however that is generally now interpreted as thousands of years, not actual 24-hour periods. If people did live longer back then, it's probably because many lethal diseases that we know of today were not in existence during those times.

I think the tales of people living for hundreds of years are myths and fables. I do not believe that Noah actually lived 989 years or however long he was supposed to have lived. I believe age was used by storytellers to imply greatness and wisdom. Therefore, if one was said to be very old, it was intended to imply that they were very wise, not that they actually lived for hundreds of years.
The Bible is not, and was never intended to be, non-fiction.

The bible is a mixture of fact and fiction. People living for centuries is one of the fictional parts.
