Do NOT take your car. Sell it and use the money on rent. Go to Craig's List and look for roommate openings. You will not be able to afford to live by yourself. You'll need $2000/month for rent and $500/month for transportation and $500 for food and incidentals.

Yes, you need to visit first to feel if it is right for you... And second..What part of New York are you going to the city or just the state.. cause the state is a nice place but the city can be crowded rude and unconventional at getting around in you will need to learn the subway schedule or walk every where or if you can take a taxi (once and a while) that can get expensive also... You might want to look at the city's out and around the big city if you truly want to go there if so then you will need a car ... and if you are going farther out then take your pick New York truly is a beautiful state.. Good Luck at your adventure...

I work in NYC, the best city in the world, i live in brooklyn. The subway is my main method of transportation. know the system well, and you can get anywhere in the city pretty fast and cheap. the subway is only $2. dont take taxis! they are a huge rip off. as far as place to live. living in the city is rediculously expensive. so unless your filthy rich, look into apartments in brooklyn, a neighboring borough, its just a quick subway ride away and apartments are much cheaper, and living there is a bit safer, quiter, calmer, and cooler. studios are not that expensive, you can find some apartments or roomates on Craigslist.com (newyork), or other classifieds ads. get a decent paying job in manhatten, dont bother with the bronx or even queens (2 other boroughs, and huge wastelands) downtown brooklyn is good, very hip. definitly apply for a job before you move here, and come down here for the interveiw..on the same trip, look at apartments.. take a look around the city, youll love it. city life can be a bit hectic and crazy for some out of towners, but its alot of fun, and nightlife is great here. do alot of reasearch before comeing, and come prepared, NYC is tough, but still the coolest city ever.

You should take a look at the local papers and learn about the community and what's going on around you, including upcoming events, etc. Volunteer somewhere and make friends with locals who can show you around and introduce you to more people. Choose a place to live that is within your budget, you can always move again later once you become familiar with the neighborhoods. Since you don't have a car now, take a plane, you might learn that you won't need a car once you get there.

I used to live in Georgia before moving here in NY. I waa fortunate enough that I have a cousin here in NY. My first advice is visit NY first get a feel of the city and if you are on a limited budget in regards to apt. you can find an apartment outside the city. Like me I live in Jamaica Estates about 30mins by train from Manhattan. It will depend on how you will go about this. But I recommend living outside the city like in Astoria, Jamaica, etc. My apartment is 1200/mo which is quite accessible to all public transportation.
In regards to your car, Manhattan is just a train away, that is one thing great about this city...PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. And also if you have a car.... parking is a problem if you don't want to rent a parking space you have to park on the street which have schedules fro street cleaning so you have to be on top of the street cleaning schedule.

There is a lot to consider once you get here, so really and truly visit NY first then while visiting NY look for apartments, then if you find one familiarize yourself with the surrounding. Either or this City is wonderful and expensive. Goodluck

Well if you want to live in manhattan in your studio or one bedroom your looking at $1200 to $1400 starting, you really do not need a car over here, it is to expensive to maintain it over here and public transportation takes you everywhere at any time, this city is not like ohio, it is very fast, expensive, and if you don't keep up with it then your going to hate it, i would recommend you visit first to get a feel of where you want to move and then make your plan because a plan with no research is not a good plan.

deffinitely vist this fair city first. If you dont know at least a little about it it can chew you up and spit you out. Craigs list is a great place to find cheep apartments (craigslist.com) and you need to meet somepeople and make some friends. As for spending money, stuff is expensive around here. Foodwise look around at supermarkets and get a feel for the prices. They vary a lot. Check out the little stores that are here and there and stuff. They usualy have the best stuff for a cheap price.

First off, i would not go there unless on business.
Its a nice place to visit but i wouldn't want to live there.
Stay in Ohio ,where you know your friends and family.
If you can't decide for yourself if you need a car or should fly ,you
should not leave where you live. You should not go by yourself.
To help you in this case, consult a travel agent. The agent can talk to you about everything you asked. good luck and think about it.

NY is very expensive to live in...and with gas prices how they are...a car would be bad.....plus all the traffic wont help...you can get around quite easily through subways and other public transportation....and theres always the old fashion walking...appartments can range from 1200/mo to 2500/mo for the cheap (but not crappy) ones

1. Do you have parking space arranged. 2. Do you have somewhere to live before you depart. 3. Do you know anyone there to fall back on for help.
Most important, do not give any details that might help to trace or identify you on this forum. There are many weirdoes who will try to get in touch with you and offer you 'help'. Large cities are very lonely places and are not all bright lights and parties.........
