Hair balls form when a cat has been grooming it self a lot. The cat usually coughs them up, they're a bit like balls of string but with hair.

Hair balls are little lumps of hair that get stuck in the cats throat when grooming themselves. Throughout time they get bigger , which is why a cat ends up choking one up. You can give a cat hairball treatment however , which will thin the hair and allow it to go into the stomach. Typically you can get it flavored like chicken or fish. It works kind of like drano...lol

i am sure you know that cats have a natural instinct to hunt. when they eat a mouse or something like that, the bones can injure their stomachs. to prevent these injuries, cats lick themselves and swallow the hair, which then creates a lining in their stomch. hair balls occur when cats eventually cough up this lining and later swallow new hair. to prevent hair balls, buy special food that allows the hair to pass all the way through the digestive tract, rather than sticking to the stomach.
