When boiling mussels, I noticed awful fishy smell from the pot..?

How do I prevent fishy smell when cooking mussels or clams? The odor kind of ruined the dinner for us..

Part of the smell is the liquor (juice) from the mussels or clams. The other part is that the seafood doesn't sound like it was good or had spolied. Fresh mussels and clams have very little smell. What you do smell is usually a sweet smell.

Really? How odd. Fishy smells from a mussel. And when you cook beef, what smells do you get from that? Or onions, ever cook an onion? Garlic . . . WOW . . . I would be surprised to have GARLIC smells, wouldn't you?

Hmmmm . . . you're cooking a mussel, or clam, that lives in the sea, and you wonder how you can prevent fish odors?

TRY NOT COOKING THEM! If they "offend" you so much, eat fuc king tofu.

The only thing that may cause mussels or clams to smell more than normal would be their level of freshness. If they are open at all before cooking, then they are dead (bad). throw it away. Otherwise, they are going to smell like seafood, it's natural.

My husband just ate mussels that, to me, smelled fishy before he cooked them. Now he is sick. A lot of comments were rude....why?

might want to check the freshness of your seafood....generally it should not have a heavy fishy smell....if you have a gas burner for outdoor cooking this is the best way i can think of to avoid the smell

Lemon or scallion in the boiling water helps somewhat. If it bothers you that much, you'll have to cook it outside.

They were not fresh then. Fresh seafood should not smell.
