This is not just a now a days problem. It has been going on for generations and generations. It is a fact of life that children rebel and become defiant as they began to test the waters, so to speak. It is a bad time for everyone involved in this process of attaining adulthood.

I think they understand them, but they choose to disobey or go against their judgement. Kids are told in cartoons, TV shows and friends to talk back to their parents and be independent. They encourage kids to be grown faster and rely on their-selves. So with the worldly influence and their raging hormones, they cant think clear and they don't listen to their parents.

Well, the really bad English could have something to do with it.

Other than that, I don't think children are supposed to understand their parents; I think the children are supposed to find who they are and make their own lives.

Children do understand their parents. They choose not to. Has been this way for a long time.

to much government control and a lack of discipline. When you put all this together you have a total lack of respect.

because the parents don't teach them, they want to leave it up to the schools to do that, that's why this country is all screwed up, people don't know how to raise their children...
