In the movie "I, Robot" the master computer decided that humans needed protection from themselves, and instituted martial law without human knowledge or consent. God has the same ability but does not. which is better?

This is an awesome question. I must say I love the movie very much. I choose freewill. God doesn't make us worship or serve him and he doesn't "force" us to abide by his laws. Great example. Those who abide by his laws do it out of love and adoration for thier creator.

Shalom

I don't think Free Will is a gift. I know some Christians claim that it is. They say that God loves us enough to allow us the choice to reject him and go to Hell.

Why is that considered loving?

Am I a loving parent if I allow my 2-year-old son to do whatever he wants? Am I doing the child a favor by not intervening when he wants to jam a fork in an electrical outlet or when he wants to wander onto the busy street? No, I'd be a horrible parent.

God should be held to the same standard. He has the ability to prevent us from going to Hell. Yet, he supposedly loves us enough to allow us that choice. If I could be thrown in jail for child endangerment for not doing what I can to protect my child, then why would God be considered a worthwhile god for not doing what he can to protect his children?

So, absolute free will is actually a bad thing.

Would it be a good thing having our lives completely dictated? That depends. If you have, say, Stalin dictating your life, then that could be pretty bad. If you have a truly benevolent being dictating your life, then everything he deems fit for you would indeed be for your betterment. You would be happy because he makes you happy.

But that's only assuming a being of benevolence. That is not God. Or not the Christian god, anyway. The Bible is full of stories of God being wrathful, jealous, and petty. He is not a kind, loving god. As such, total control by him would be pretty miserable. On the other hand, free will is obviously quite miserable, as he makes minimal to no effort to prevent us from going to Hell.

A middle ground is ideal, but it depends on who the grand overseer is:

* If God is benevolent, then it's better to have rules forced on you, because the rules would never cause discomfort or pain. A happy robot is better than a miserable freeman.
* If God is not benevolent, then it's better to have free will, for a sadisitc god could not be trusted to use his rules to create happiness.

Free will is always better than having rules forced upon you, however there are instances that rules must be enforced. If you are a parent that has to institute rules, etc.. you then have to force those rules or reinforce those rules on your child(ren) in order to help mold them, and then teach them about free will.

Free will is always better than being forced to do anything as it will let you decide to love as well as hate if you so choose. Otherwise you are just a robot.

Free will is a gift from the creator.
Thank him that you're not a robot.

You can choose to follow the rules or not.

But the rules exist, so police and jail, hell and heaven.

Make a wise choice.

Well Satan wanted all to return to the Father, but his plan was to force everyone to do what he wanted them to do.

As we know his plan was rejected.

It seems to be working here on earth. But the consequences leave people in bondage to sin.

God knows who will come to Him or not. He has said my sheep hear my voice and come to me.

In the end it is better to have free will and give it to the Father. It is the one thing He has given us and it is the ONLY thing we can give back.

I don't think most people understand what free will is even about. To have create control on your life is barely even percieved by followers of most religions. Sometimes I wonder if people truly need religion because they can't handle responsibilty.
