I was told that I would not be able to open earlier versions of Microsoft Word if I upgrade to the "2003" version. Is this true? Seems weird to me!

All newer version of Office/Word are compatible with files from older versions. If you upgrade you will be able to open Word documents from early version.

However if you create a document in the NEW version of Word, it may not open properly in an OLDER version. (That may be what the other person was trying to tell you). The new version of Word, however, does allow you to save documents in the older format for people who only have the older version of Word.

You can upgrade your version of Word without any danger of not being able to open older Word files.

The answer is YES, you will be able to open and modify those older Word files. And if you create documents in Word 2003, the older versions will be able to open and modify them too with a couple of formatting issues, but mainly it should be OK.

2003 is backward compatible with all other versions, meaning yes you can open any version of Office document. Even the 2007 beta of Office will open older version files.
