I would never "buy" a cat. Your best best it is to check out your nearby shelters and adopt a sweet little kitty that needs a home. There are so many kittens each year dumped off without homes since some people are too ignorant to spay or neuter their animals. Paying for a pure bred cat is not a good idea in my opinion, most of those cats aren't real social able, not to mention most of the breeders are greedy and the animals can be inbred and have health issues. Most shelters have these kittens/cats that are so grateful for a loving home, have all their shots and are fixed already for you. Some shelters have online viewing so you can look ahead of time. If you keep your cat inside, vaccinated they can live up to 18 or so years. I have three cats, Maine Coon I adopted through Petsmart, a tabby I adopted from a shelter and a calico I adopted through the vets office, they are incredible and so loving. Good luck to you, they are easy pets to manage and will be a great buddy for you.

I think going to the shelter is a good idea. As you are looking around you may find that one stands out to you or one seems to want you more. Cats often pick their people, you know.
We got our cat when we lived in Japan. She came scooting into the yard one day, so small she could fit in one hand. She was flea-ridden and what little hair she had stood out like a punk rocker. She had a short tail (a lot of Japanese cats do), and her coloring is what is called in the States, tortoiseshell, I think, and in Japan 'Rusty Tiger" (sabitori). She's now thirteen, and settled happily into American life.
Get a kitten. It's taking care of the kitten that bonds you to her (if she's an indoor cat, make sure you get a female), and she to you.
I love cats. And I sure hope you enjoy yours.

Go to a shelter. There are plenty of cats who need a home. They are the sweetest cats you could ever get. They will never take you for granted and will love you forever. They are very grateful. There are a looooot of cats to chose from.
So you can find the one you like the first time you even look. Good luck.

Go to your local humane society. The cats and kittens they have there are very well taken care of, have all of their shots, and a LOT of human interaction! Most places have rooms that you can sit in with the cat you are considering, and interact with the cat, and get a feel for the cats' personality.
I have had bad experiences getting cats from a pet store. In my opinion, the cats at a shelter are better taken care of and more loved!
You can also try going to your local PetSmart - they have adoption days where they have shelter animals come in for adoptions. All animals were abandoned or rescued, and all that are adoptable are in excellent health.
I got my cat from the Humane Society, and I couldn't be happier. He's just like me!

Visit a shelter. I have found great companions there. Also, don't just look at the kittens. The last cat I got from a shelter was about 1 year old and she is a beautiful loving tabby named Tabitha.

AFTER I got my Siamese Kitty I found out that they are probably the most popular breed in the world...as well as one with the highest tune variety in it's vocal chords (So it's the best one to speak on behalf of the other cats :-)
As well as their loyality that can be compared and overcome to many dogs
As for some disadvantages (in some people's oppinions) they require much care and attention...and sometimes they're hard to deal with...

most cats display the same behavior. It all depends on thier owner. I would suggest going to you're nearest animal shelter though. They have tons of adorable cats of all ages and sizes ready for a loving home.

There really isn't a difference. Most cats are mixed breeds. I suggest adopting one from a shelter. Give a little kittie a second chance. Boys tend to be more independent and girls are more cuddly.

~Go to the website entitled "Kitty Wars" Lots of pictures of lots of cats. Once you've worked out your preferences, (fuzzy or sleek, big or little, pointy face of flat) then you can tell your mom what you would really like. On the other hand, I get my cats from the animal shelter, and choosing them comes down to how their personality works with mine and my family.

It depends on how much care you are willing to put into the cat.
European short hairs are easy, do not shed much and are very playful.
Angora are beautiful cats with long hair but shed a lot (all year round), not very playful but they do love to talk to you and follow you around.
It is best to read up on different types and find one that fits your lifestyle.
