Keep the child awake before the flight. You might get lucky and have a sleeping baby on the flight. A bottle and favorite snack food are surefire pacifiers. And the child will likely be enchanted by all the neighboring adults who will make fools of themselves trying to make friends with the baby.

It really depends on the attention span of your one year old. I was worried taking my first on a plane the first time she was about two and it was about a three hour flight. However she was so fascinated by flying that she kept looking out the window and watching the clouds etc even though she couldn't really see much.
Pack things your child likes. Coloring books, a favorite dolly or car. Remember if your child can walk they can have their very own carry on. I got a small toddler sized backpack and filled it with toys my daughter loved at that age and books. And also small snacks. Cheerios, goldfish, graham crackers, a juice box etc.
Before you get on the plane try to keep the child awake so maybe they will sleep on it. Let them run around the airport as much as possible before boarding.
Stay relaxed the more you are feeling the stress the more your child will!
Let me also add that if your child still takes a pacifier or bottle give it to them at take off and landing. Remember if your ears are popping theirs may be too and the sucking will help from popping and discomfort. If they do not take either and are awake open your mouth wide or yawn and try to get them to imitate you.
Good luck!

I too have a 1 year old, I would bring a photo album of family members, baby's love to look at familiar faces and try to name them all, that should keep him or her occupied for a while. And maybe one of those little video players that play cartoons. Color crayons and books.

The secret is to stay one step ahead of your little one in the areas of entertainment and activities, food and sleep.
keep individually wrapped snacks: it easy, nutritious, and cheap to put things like grapes into baggies
If they're listening to songs they like, they're not as antsy about sitting still so long.
Additional: coloring books. And there favorite toy.
Personally. You may want to keep them awake and active prior to the trip. So when they get on the plane they are tired and is more than willing to sleep. Bring a nice comfie pillow.
Passengers tend to get angry when there is an active loud child.
Hope these tips help you

If possible try to have them sleepy so they will nap most of the way. Wake them up early or don't let them have a nap before departing might work. Also a small bag with favorite small toys help to keep them occupied.

I went to goodwill before our flight and got several new (to us) small toys and packed a special bag. I also got new crayons and coloring books, several small favorite snacks. I found a cheap tape player that my kids used.
