You don't have to, but you should in case of incorrect postage or incorrect address information.

The only thing you have to put on the envelope for the USPS is the address where it is being sent, and at least 1 cent in postage. If there is not enough postage on a letter, the post office will deliver it to the recipient "postage due" They can either pay the postage, or refuse the letter.

If the letter in not deliverable for any reason it will be returned to the sender, if there is a return address. If there is no return address, it ends up in the "dead letter" office, where they may open it to try to find information to return it, or it may be disposed of after a period of time.

Most other delivery companies, UPS, FedEX, DHL and the like will require a return address to accept the package!

No, if it is addressed correctly and has the correct postage it should be fine. The "return address" is in case it needs to be returned. The envelope will arrive with a postmark showing the post office where it was processed so it might be possible to trace it if for some reason that was necessary.

Yes or you will go to Postal jail and sort mail for the rest of your life. Don't believe me ask a letter carrier. Other crimes- putting a stamp on upside-down. Also putting a return address on the back flap of a letter is a crime- but not so bad.

No. People put return addresses in case it is undeliverable or so who you are sending it to will know who it is from before they actually open it.
