It is common to include a checking system (sometimes called parity bit) in long numbers. As people above explained, the last letter is used to check the validity of the number. This is not so much as to check for forgeries (how hard would it be to find out the "secret formula" as to check if the number was entered correctly and avoid mistakes.

It don't stand for any thing. The main purpose of the letter behind our IC is to let the law enforcers to identify the personal. There is a formula to calculate the alphaet based on your IC no. With this the law enforcer will determined if your IC is a genuine or forge one.
