Are you more or less likely to talk to someone who puts effort into their typing, or do you not care at all?

I'm not a grammar nazi, but it puts me off when people deliberately misspell words, or use single letter abbreviations of words in everyday typing. It feels like talking to a 13 year old.

I know exaclty what u mean... DAMN!!!

Heh, Seriously though I am not a grammar nazi either, however I think it is telling when people don't put any effort into their communications, or attempt to use words that aren't words. I will cut sombody a break if it isn't all the time but if it is all they can do then I won't talk to them much or atleast I won't be inclined to continue to talk to them.

Sometimes particularly on this service, I will see a question so poorly worded that I will actually suggest that english and typing classes would solve the persons problem... then I will offer advice on what they actually asked assuming that I can decipher it.

I agree with you! It's annoying, not to mention hard to read, when people use abbreviations and alternate spellings, but don't use punctuation and capital letters. I also thinks it makes a person either look like they're 12 years old, or not educated enough to know better. I guess that means I'm too old, or not 'cool' or whatever the word for that is now, but I'm a little too busy working a full time job and having a social life to 'keep it real', as it were.

I absolutely DO care about grammar and spelling when talking to others, here or anywhere else. It's one of the things that sets Intelligence apart from Stupidity. I do, however misspell certain words only for effect.

I think that a lot the spelling "weirdnesses" these days comes from extensive use of IMs and TMs where space is limited. There is certainly NO excuse to use them in other forums.

Me personally I really do not like talking to people when they want to half type a word or a meaning, it's not because I do not want to talk to children it's because I am new on the computer and do not know half the stuff they are trying to say.
I also think it's a bad habit to get when you are young, because it's a sign of laziness if you don't even want to take the time to type a full word why would you not try to find the easy way out of everything in life....

It depends on the situation.
One extreme is instant messaging: I fully expect the other person to mistpye some words and abbreviate a lot of other words, because of the pace of typing and the casual setting.
The other extreme is reviews of things, like on Epinions or Amazon. Those sites give reviewers an extra chance to check over their review before submitting it for thousands of other people to read it. Therefore, if I read a review that is filled with grammatical errors and abbreviations, I won't even take the reviewer's opinion seriously, because it is a reflection of her level of intelligence.
For things between those two extremes, like blogs, I expect people to use good enough language that I can understand them.

I hate to say it Mikkel but I do feel the same way you do.
I enjoy answering questions but when I look at some of them and see how poorly they were written I feel as if they didn't put much thought into it so I am not going to waste my efforts on answering them. In many cases, these are 13 year olds asking the questions! I'm sure you will receive numerous comments about this from one side or the other. It should be interesting.
Good question!

Well..during informal sessions in the Internet people don't really care about spelling or grammar because they don't lose anything and they have a casual feeling "who cares about rules". But once it comes to business emails or any other formal stuff people are very careful about rules, format and related stuff..Its similar to text messaging-You cant impose rules on informal talks- So its not a problem of grave concern unless people start to forget spelling

I'm with you. There is a big difference between typos or common abbreviations than those that just show ignorance or try to type in the cool hip hop ebonics. You can definitlely tell the age range or intelligence of the people your talking to.

Yes, I will usually not talk to someone if they can't be at least trying to be grammatically correct and spelling correctly. Mostly because most people that do that are under 18, and the last thing I need is some parent to come along and threaten me for talking to their 14 year old kid who told me they're 19 (it's happened).
