There are three different types of camcorders: MiniDV, DVD and Hard drive camcorders. For home use it is useless to buy a DVD or a Hard drive camcorders coz they are very very expensive and in terms of quality, they are not as good as a MiniDV camcorder.
A MiniDV is an uncompressed video format. So you don't loose the quality at all. There are many available in the market depending on how much you want to spend. As you said you want to take good quality still photos, then you are looking to spend about £500. To be honest with you, none of the camcorders will give you a good quality still photos. For a £500 camcorder, you will get maimum 3 million pixels which is still poor as compared to even a cheap digital camera. The camcorders' sensor is not made for taking high quality still photos, it is specifically made for video as videos don't need many pixels, they are recorded in number of lines instead of pixels.
My preference would be a sony camcorder. Well most of the people do go for sony, but i really hate sony for still digital cameras, but for camcorders i think sony or canon are the best. I personally own a Sony DCR HC30 camcorder, bit old but excellent quality, touch screen, built in digital effects. Now a days, camcorders have good optical zoom, at least 20X.
I hope this helps.
