How do you motivate a 12-year old to do well in his studies? My brother is smart but he's just lazy. And he never deliver his promises. His final exams are around the corner and he still hangs out with his schoolmates after school. He's not serious about his schoolwork.

What can I do to motivate him to do well? My parents aren't strict with him. I've tried everything I could to help him but he isn't trying hard himself

Your brother is fortunate to have you as his sister. It is actually very hard to motivate the student around this age to study hard. You need to tell him he needs to study hard in order to get good result. Well, he may listen to you or just don't even bother. It also depends a lot on who mixed around with. If his friends are the group who is hardworking, then I think you can be assured that he will try his best for the exam.

I was lazy and always hang around at shopping centre during my Secondary 2, I got second last in the class at year end exam. But I could give my classmate tuition when I was in Secondary 3, and I got 5 A1 in my "O" level. He got to help myself, no one can motivate him if he refuse to.

We started making it mandatory that from 7 till 8 every night the whole family sat at the table to do homework or read or catch up on the newspaper. My kids grades went from almost failing to A's in a matter of 2 weeks.

Your brother is fortunate to have a caring sister like yourself. The problem should be addressed but by your parents. You can tell him that you are worried about his grades but he doesn't see you in an authoritive way. Maybe mention it to your parents and see if you can get them motivated to make a difference in your brother's life. Good luck

Laziness might not be so much the problem. It could be that he's just bored either by the subject matter or the way(s) in which he is being taught. Not everyone enjoys (or learns well) in the traditional school setting.

The problem and solution lies only with your parents. Until they decide to discpline him you have no hope of ever trying to encourage him. To him, you are just a sister and no one in authority. Maybe you could talk to your parents to get them move involved.
