Yes, saffron is the most expensive herb, at several thousand per pound, last I checked, because it takes 40,000 stamen threads to be picked to make a pound. Luckily, the stuff is really lightweight, and it only takes a couple of saffron threads to flavor a whole pot of rice.

Could be vanilla, but I think it might well be saffron. The reason saffron is so expensive is because it takes a lot of flowers to get a little of the spicy yellow stuff that makes latin rice recipes sooooo good.

It is Saffron- which is the stamens of a certain type of flower. It has to be hand picked and each flower only contains about 3 stamens or so, so it is extremely expensive.
