I have been taking care of my nephew for 4 years now and I have power of attorney over him but I do not have any legal custody of him will the states help me with him financially? His birth mother abandoned him and he is like a son to me where would I go to try and get financial help from the state?

Dear Mrs. T,

You should see a lawyer, and look into either terminating her rights and adopting him, or getting a guardianship over, or legal custody of, your nephew.

I know it's not inexpensive, so look at your state's court website and see if they have forms that you can download to go about this process yourself.

Contact your local Dept. of Human Services. Make sure you have your nephews Birth Certificate, Social Security card and the Power of Attorney paper. You could make copies of each to save time, but still take the originals with you.
