This would be a good plot for a Saturday Night Live skit. Of course, who would you get to testify from The Other Side? George Burns?
Sadly, religions were created by Man for the purpose of controlling the masses. After Rome fell, there was a huge void. The Christian religion rushed in with its false doctrines and created a Holy Roman Empire. Remember that the great majority of people were illiterate and books were not widely available. The clergy and monks were the ones who had the power of "God's word." Isn't is strange how the invention of the printing press, the Renaissance(sp?) and the Protestant Reformation all occured together in history? People began to think for themselves. Catholicism predictably reacted with The Inquisition. What does that tell you?
Asian religious history is very different and I don't know that they offer false promises, although I vaguely remember something bizarre about the Japanese kamakazi. I believe that was a deliberate distortion/manipulation to get pilots to kill themselves and do it gladly, similar to the 70 virgins nonsense of the Muslims. The beliefs go back thousands of years and contain aspects I personally believe that future world religions will have.
The answers are within. Do not hate the religionists, they are going through a process just like you and me.

The problem with religion is that it is the perfect con. It is government protected, tax free, and the product they sell never has to be delivered until you reach a place that doesn't exist. Little wonder so many con-men (and women) jump on that manured money wagon. Because of the shield provided by government to not hold religion to the advertising guidelines other businesses must follow, it would be impossible to bring a lawsuit against them until the Constitution is amended to correct this flaw.

It was already tried in Italy of all places. The trial went pretty far. One guy ended up being a Roman Catholic preist, and the other a staunch Atheist. Apparently these two guys who went to school together met in court and had it out. If I remember right, the EEC got involved in the decision.
This kind of thing, if you ask me, and you have, is straight out of Hell.
But on a rather more personal note, your premise has too broad a spectrum to it. What's impossible? Who's expecting me to pay? And don't say all of them. They all don't do any such thing.
But the right ones do! lol

Ah, but there's an escape clause.
"Religious deception"
Let us list these marks which identify these deceivers:
1. They will bear the name of Christian.
2. They will be popular and widely accepted.
3. They will be highly regarded and have connections with the political leaders of the world.
"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."
Matthew 7:15

Go see the movie The Man Who Sued God - Billy Connolly.
But then in order to sue you have to have proof.

Interesting question. Some guy is suing in Italy because he cites evidence that Jesus never lived and claims the church is conning people by saying that he did...so it's possible...

what do you mean false advertising? religions are all about faith, not about fact. so if you don't believe in a religion, then i guess you could call it false advertising. but no, they can't be sued because of right of religion in the constitution.

I know, but who or what are you going to sue? The guys who started these religions are all dead, and you can't possibly sue the followers can you? Except for the pope. we can still sue him, but who has the time and boredom to care?
