Because of their owners training them to be agressive, just like pitbulls. All dogs can be trained to be lovely sweet pets.

Because people are dumb, and don't realize its not the animal it's the owner. But I didn't realize that rotti's have such a bad rap.. where I live, Pitt bulls are the poor breed that has such a bad reputation... they've actually banned owning Pitt bulls where I live. Pitt bulls and Rottweilers are both beautiful breeds, it's the way people are training and raising them, that is ruining their reputations.

Have you ever heard of a killer pug? Because of their size and the strength of their jaws, an untrained Rot can and has killed people.
So many times people have bred dogs just to make a quick buck. They don't care about the temperament. In my area years ago, cocker spaniels have been noted to have a bad temperament and being biters. Of course, because of the small size of a cocker, they wouldn't be able to kill you. There was also a guy selling basset hounds that were hyper.

Because of the size and strength of a rottweiler, the average person would have trouble controlling it, if they never started training it when it was young, small and manageable. Also the breed was bred to be aggressive, unlike a Newfoundland that was bred to be saving people. When you get bad genetics,(meanness) into a breed of a dog, add the size and strength, and being untrained, you have a lethal combination.

The reason they have such a bad rap is because everyone thinks that they are suppossed to be trained guard/hunting dogs so people beat them to be better and they dont like that and they attack.

Originally rotts were raised in Germany to be used during times of war. The trench wars of World War One was were they were used a while lot. The breed was ment to be tough and not to startle easily and to be trained to follow order under extreme amounts of pressure. That exisits in every pure blood Rott today and because of their ability to look focused and concentrated, they seem very scary. Any dog can be trained to be mean and to attack on command...its just most people aren't afraid of a toy poodle. :)

One reason is because they were used for protection, and people made them mean. Another reason is because they have bred the brains out of most of them. They breed for size and look not for brains. This is just my opinion, and we all know what they say about opinions. Good luck.

They have the "rap" they deserve. You can't go a month without hearing about a rottweiler killing a little kid.

All you need is a few articles about how this rottweiler jumped a fence and mauled a kid and that's the end of that.

Because to many owners either train them to be aggressive or just don't properly train them at all. Any dog is only as good as it's training.

i think because alot people have used them as guard dogs, and have been agressive. i have a rottweiler pup, and we're trying our hardest to teach him to be gentle and kind, but unfortunately, peple around where we live automatically think he's aggressive when we pass. (",)
