While "papers" and registration with the AKC (Canadian KC, etc.) do imply that a dog is purebred, it's important to remember that the papers are only as good as the breeder who registers the litter. There are plenty of unethical people out there (especially those will puppy mills/who supply the pet stores) who will falsify records because they know that the public has been taught to value "papers". Doesn't matter if the litter in question is actually purebred or not -- as long as the "papers" say it is.
Sometimes the female is accidentally bred by a dog of another breed, and sometimes these people just flat don't know which of their dogs bred which. So they pick a dog in their kennel of the same breed and register the litter. Of course, the AKC has fines/suspensions for people who do things like this, but they have to get wind of it and investigate the breeder's records in order to do anything about it.
The best way to ensure that your dog is purebred is to go to an ethical, responsible breeder. For information how to find one, check this link:

The only way to be 100% sure is if your dog's parents are both AKC registered, and you have a pedigree. Otherwise, your dog can look pure, but without the paper trail, there is no proof of anything.

The only way to truely know if your dog is a pure breed is if the dog has papers. He will have to be registered with the american Kennel association. He will be called purebread if both of his parents have purebread papers.

You cannot make out if you simply look at it. You need to find out if the dogs ancestorsare all of the same breed.

You can only know for sure if your dog has papers from the AKC (American Kennel Club). They will state what breed he is, and info about his parents.
Otherwise, you can make an educated guess but that's all it will be.

the papers are honestly the only way to tell. and the pure breed people are pretty good about that paper work when they produce it.
