Boxsprings don't usually wear out as fast as a mattress. Although the sales people will "strongly recommend" that you purchase both. If your boxspring is still in good shape, just get the mattress.
I had to buy both about 6 years ago, and asked the sales person what the estimated life span of each was. She said that the box spring should last about twice as long as the mattress. Now I didn't buy top of the line stuff either, but if I remember correctly the mattress is suppose to last (about) 10-15 years. As long as I take care of it (no more jumping on it).

Not really. The stores "SAY" that it is better to buy a whole new set. But who is taking the money. I have had 3 mattresses and 1 box spring for years and there is no difference from when I bout my 1st new set, to the set I have now. If you were going with one of the new types of mattresses like thremapudic or latex then I would suggest you go with the whole set. However, if it is the traditional type I would just but the mattress. Worst case you can always go back and buy the box springs.

The furniture store tries to sell them as sets. See if yours is in good shape, not sagging.
They maybe won't guarantee the mattress unless they sell the box spring too.

Not if it's still in good shape and the correct size. However, most mattress "deals" included the entire set.
