This is actually a very valid philosophical question. Then answer is there is no such thing as first cause exactly for the reason you stated - otherwise you just get an arbitrarily assumed first cause (which people generally and mistakenly think is God) or just an infinite regress.
So the answer to your question is that God didn't come from anywhere because there is no such entity, other than in the imagination of believers. Go to the top of the class!

I have wondered the same thing and asked many wise people. The crux of this question can be summed up in two answers:
1. If we want to believe God is real we cannot possibly understand that he came from nothing as human logic cannot understand that something can come from nothing. It is beyond our mental capabilities. Religious fanatics insist there is a God, an almighty creator. But there is no way of understanding how he came to be. We are not designed to know!
or
2. There is no God. We evolved from gasseous matter billions of years ago and when we die we die. Forever. There is no beyond. There is no nothing. No romantic notion of the pearly gates of heaven. Just death. Blackness. Have you ever been into the hospital for an operation? Can you remember being under anaesthetic? Did you dream? Could you feel anything? No. Because they shut down your synapses. That's what death feels like, but forever. The notion of a soul is a fairy tail designed to make humans feel better about death. It gives them an excuse to waste time in life and have regrets, assuring themselves that there is an after life that will be better.
Get busy living or get busy dying! It will remain a question of Philosophers forever.....who created the creator...and who created the creator of the creator...and so it goes on...infinately! Good luck! Don't bust too many brain cells over it!

Funny you should mention God and evolution in the same breath as it takes a longer leap to believe evolution. They are two separate theories that when correctly calculated span the same period of time which is somewhere around 6500 years or so. Darwin even stated that his theory is not valid or true. Science has proved that the carbon dating method used to prove evolution was flawed and that when properly calculated equals the same span of time as creation. I hope you didn't miss that major news story in the early 80's. God was not created. He exists from infinity and will exist to infinity. God created the Heavens and the Earth and so goes the rest of the Bible.

But if God doesn't exist, the Universe then has to come from somewhere, doesn't it? How could it just have 'always existed' before the Big Bang? So scientists have the same question as theists, just in different terms. If we find the answer to one, perhaps we'll find it suitable for both.

My god..... Now we have people saying "time" only goes back 6500 years or so??? This is just too preposterous to even comment upon.
No, I think I will comment on this. I hope that this person does not represent mainstream creationist thinking. Because if he does, it's no wonder people can't have intelligent debate or discussion. I have dust bunnies under my bed that are older than 6500 years!! :-)

first of all forget "He" in the practical sense. second of all forget this idea that things "must" be anything just because the limitations of human logic say so. space and time is limitless, there is no beginning and there is no end. there is no beginning to what you call God and there is no end. I know thats beyond the scope of your thinking, but we are quite insignifigant in the big universe and so are our thoughts.

One almighty being that created and controls everything,, Bollocks to that.
If the bible says that the kingdom of god is within, then its down to us if we beleive or not, yes ? either that or everyone is there own god.
re. your previous question, evolution is what I beleive happened.

FIRST OF ALL, I DO EXIST AND I AM NOT A "HE"
BUT A "SHE" AND I GET TIRED OF PEOPLE REFERRING
TO ME AS A "HE" UNLESS YOU ARE REFERRING TO MY
HUSBAND. THE SECOND PART OF MY HOLY TRINITY.
BUT THAT IS HIS DEPARTMENT.
SECOND OF ALL...I WILL TELL YOU WHERE I CAME FROM.
I CAME FROM THE SAME PLACE YOU DID.
THINK ABOUT IT.
