1.) What exactly dose the brightness mean? 800 cd/m2? What does that mean?
2.) What do 4801, 480p, 729p, 1080i mean?
3.) Should I only buy "popular" brands? There are many good TVs out there that seem to be much better for cheaper. One brand I was looking at was Olevia.

800 candelas per meter squared, meaning the tv performance of a displays black level, peak brightness, greyscale and gamma readings, the higher the better. Question 2 is different resolustion formats. I stands for interlaced and P stands for Progressive. 720P & 1080I are very close in resolution quality and 1080P is true high def. The bottom line is you get what you pay for. Mitsubishi, Sony, Toshiba, Sharp, and Panasonic are the most reliable brands out there, just not in that order. Generic are just that, a copy!

All LCDs will display progessive scan regardless of the input; this means that the whole picture is contained in each field. So for LCD there are two choices 720p and 1080p (as far as the display is concerned). 1080p is preferred, but 720p looks good, too. The larger the screen, the more important it is to have 1080p. The set will accept all of the formats you listed and automatically convert them if necessary, so you don't have to worry about it. I would say do not buy off brands, but Olevia has received positive reviews.
