You need to toast them or let them dry out in a sunny place so that the shell will open up a little. Otherwise, you will probably not be able to get them open without lots of effort.

I agree, wash them and then bake them in the oven for a couple of minutes, they taste much nicer when roasted. on foil, and then olive/sunflower oil to roast nicely.
