Root beer is a sweetened carbonated mixture of brewed bark and herbs. In its current form it is non-alcoholic, but at some point in history it was likely an alcoholic beverage as was ginger ale originally. Depending on which herbs used as some point it was probably used as a medicine as well. Remember Coca-Cola was originally mixed up at the pharmacy counter for headaches, so this is entirely possible. Root beers origins are older than Coke. In America its definitely as old as the 1700's and in some form likely older. Regardless of its unclear beginnings, root beer is a symbol (at least for a lot of Americans) of the happy times of our childhood, being young ( not old enough to order a real beer) and innocent. It's popular to pour it over vanilla ice cream to make a float. I am assuming that by SA you mean Saudi Arabia so most likely you will only be able to find bottled A & W or IBC. However, when you do go to Disneyland you might try one of the smaller brands of rootbeer. There are quite a few available and there are still small establishments out there that make their own rootbeers for sales at their counter only.

Root beer is a fermented beverage made from a combination of vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, sassafras root bark, nutmeg, anise, and molasses among other ingredients. Many local brands of root beer exist, and homemade root beer is made from concentrate or (rarely) from actual roots. Like alcoholic beer, root beer has a thick and foamy head when poured.

Root beer is a uniquely North American beverage, constituting about 3% of the American soft drink market.

Other ingredients may include allspice, birch bark, coriander, juniper, ginger, wintergreen, hops, burdock root, dandelion root, spikenard, pipsissewa, guaiacum, yellow dock, honey, clover, cinnamon, prickly ash bark, and yucca.

Due to the wide variety of ingredients possible the flavor of root beer is widely variable between brands. This is especially true of local brands. Root beer is very similar in taste to sarsaparilla, which may also be called root beer.

In Britain, there are several differentiated root beers, which rose to prominence with the temperance movement in the 20th century. These include sarsaparilla, dandelion and burdock, and ginger beer. They were strongly flavored drinks that people could use as an alternative to alcoholic beverages, and there tended to be a strong local preference for one of these. Well into the 1960s, these outsold cola drinks.

Hope this Helps

Root beer is soda pop. A & W is probably the best known brand in the USA. It is dark brown in color, similar to Coca Cola. It is way down on the list of popular, non-alcohol, cold drinks. It is almost too sweet in taste for me.

Its a soda, like Coke, a sugary carbonated beverage. Originally it was made with sassafras leaves but today it is usually just flavoring. The flavoring can vary a lot by brand. Some are very good and some are gross so try several before you decide if you like it or not.

It's a sweet dark carbonated soft drink, with caffeine (like Coke or Pepsi) and using an extract of the root of sarsaspirilla as the main flavoring.

it's a soft drink ( soda ) made from the root of the sarsaparilla tree ( bush ? )

it USED to be made from the root itself. Now, of course, it's usually just flavored.

there is nothing that it compares to, at least I don't think so......and no, I don't think he'll be disappointed....it's a great tasting drink !!!....

after he has his first one......you can make him a root-beer float, another WONDERFUL drink.......float a big scoop of vanilla ice-cream in a glass of root beer....and enjoy !
