My Grandfather, (that's my Dad's Dad) ran a boarding house. My Dad recently spilled to me that he was abused by one of the guys who lived there as a paying house guest over a period of about two years, this man was a pedophile.
My Dad also told me that years later when was in his teens he used to go out with his gang at night looking for homosexuals to bash up to get revenge. I told my Dad he'd been beating up on the wrong people and that Gays are not pedophiles, I think he is beginning to realise his mistake but it still hasn't totally sunk in.
My Dad is a complex and troubled man, he joined the army aged eighteen and served in war zones for six years, he is a loving Dad but he thinks because I am gay I am somehow broken and need to be fixed...I'm working on helping Dad understand that what happened to him as a boy was not his fault, that a pedophile is not the same thing as a gay man and that I am not broken or faulty because I am gay...this is a tall order.

For him to realize the entirety of the wrong he did, is to face all that guilt. That's got to be tough for him, I'm sure he realizes now, that it's not gays, that it's perverts who hurt kids.
