Are you in the UK? No. Maternity leave and sick leave are totally different. But why would you WANT to go off sick??

Not sure what country you are in, but here in Australia you can have 6 weeks maternity leave paid for and up to 12 month unpaid.
If you really are sick and perhaps must have the extra time off, you can claim some time off sick paid for, but I don't think it's more than 10 days. Any other sick days are unpaid. Do you have any holidays owing?
Other than that maybe you can just request not to return to work until bub turns one. If you are in Australia, centrelink help out with benefits and you can have your family tax assistance at the maximum rate after you have a baby before you return to work.
Good luck

Are u in the UK?
You will ge your 6 months staturtory maternity pay and after that you can take another 6 months unpaid.
So techinically if you say u aren't able to go back they will put u onto unpaid leave.
To be on the safe side and ensuring you get paid for being sick, got back for a week then get signed of.
Sneaky but you'll be back on full wage rather than gettin put onto unpaid leave.

In the US you get 6 weeks maternity leave then you can take (not paid) 3 monthes maternity leave. After that you have to start using vacation or go back to work.

If you feel that you are not physically or mentally able to return to work once your materinity leave has come to an end then no you do not have to go back to work, however you should see your doctor to ensure you get officially certified as being 'off sick'.
In your own interest ensure you understand what payment cover you will receive once you are 'off sick' so that you can take steps to supplement your income through social service support (if you are lucky enough to have a local dss office that knows what they are doing - rare).

It depends on your company policy. Here in kenya you can extend a maternity leave with a sick off without necessary having to come back to work. All in all companies are different.

If you are sick then of course you are entitled to stay off. Depending on where and who you work for will make the difference on pay etc. If you are member of a workers union then contact them to check your pay entitlements, then phone your HR department. Your sick time will start from the day you are due to return to work.
Having babies is not plane sailing and many people have health problems afterwards, you are not the first. Enjoy your new baby.

do what is best for your child and you. No one can force you to return if you don't want to. Supervisor can go over options with you.

You have to clear it with your supervisor. I know someone who did this. Tell them you aren't ready to come back yet...and you are still having some difficulties. Good Luck.
