Speaking in tongues is ONE OF THE GIFTS of the Holy Spirit and not THE GIFT of the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in tongues is edifying unto yourself and glorifying God. It is a one to one contact of man to God. The Apostle Paul said in Corinthians that if you talk in tongues when others are present, then you should be able to interpret it so that others too are benefited. Otherwise you should refrain from speaking in tongues. Usually it is glorifying God when in the privacy of your room and you are alone in communion with God. The Holy Spirit in you communes with God in a language unknown to you. That is the best part of speaking in tongues.

Speaking in tongues occured in the Book of Acts in the Bible and was the supernatural ability to speak to someone in their own language. When the Holy Spirit came, after Christ ascended to heaven, there were a group of about 3,000 Jewish people gathered from all over the world and they spoke 16 different languages all mentioned by name in Acts 2. This was the beginning of the church, the Bible had not been completed and this was God's method of spreading the gospel throghout the whole world. It was a temporary ministry that occured twice more in the book of Acts. Peter explained in a sermon that this was the fulfillment of a prophesy written in the book of Joel. There has never been anything like it since. The modern "tongues" movement was started by Charles Pharnam Fox in 1906 when he coached a woman named Agnus Osman into a physic experience where she began to babble in unknown sounds that resembled language but extensive studies have proved that they are not. Charles Fox basically claimed Peter was wrong when he said in Acts 2 that then was the fulfilment of Joel's prophesy and claimed that what happened in 1906 was the fulfilment of the prophesy and millions of people have believed him forming the pentacostal church. It is an addicting experience creating a real euphoric experience which people love and therefore are closed minded to the Bible. If you doubt what I say, then just try and find someone who only speaks English and have them speak to someone who does not know any English. That is all it would take to prove it was supernatural. Bottom line - Stay away from it, it is a fake and causes much damage to the church of Christ.

Charismatic Pentecostals, claim it is the evidence of one having rcvd the Holy Spirit. NOT TRUE! No where in the bible does it say such a thing!

The Bible says that you will know an individual imparted with the Holy Spirit by their actions- or fruits:

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, a quiet mind, kind acts, well-doing, faith,
Gal 5:23 Gentle behaviour, control over desires: against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24 And those who are Christ's have put to death on the cross the flesh with its passions and its evil desires.
Gal 5:25 If we are living by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us be guided.

Speaking in tongues is the most basic form of direct conversation between you and God. Speaking in tongues is almost always prompted by the holy spirit. When we are praying sometimes, we are lost for words or we want to develop a deeper prayer communications, the spirit will prompt us to pray in tongues. Sometimes we find that when people have developed their gift to pray in tongues, they like to show off by using it all of the time. According to scripture, we should be careful in speaking in tongues in the public unless there is someone who can interpret it. If you are interested in developing your tongue language just pray for help, wisdom, and His mercy.

Well for starters it no longer happens. Speaking in tongues is basically when god is speaking through you. The main reason for it was so that he was able to teach people about himself, so that they could write the Bible. The people that you see in the church doing it today are just up there blabbering random words of no consequence and of no meaning.

Speaking in tongues is speaking in another person's native language, although you do not even know you are speaking it, and having it understood as a message from God through you.

It's just like God giving you something to say and He change it into another language and someone else will translate it into English or your mother tongue. But it is done only if the Holy Spirit comes down.

Read it in the Book of Corinthians. But Paul said you should not do it if the others can't understand it. You can do it alone as an edification to God.
