You are definitely compressing a nerve somewhere down your spine. I think its most likely a thoracic nerve, which would be the result of a 'too soft' mattress. Try a harder bed for a few nights and see if it changes anything, otherwise go and get an MRI and see if you have any compressed disks.
Good Luck!!!

I think you have to pay attention to Eddie and haider011. They both mention possible causes. The brachial plexus is actually located in your armpit region on both sides. It has nothing to do with heart or lungs.
If the numbness is in the left hand only, another possibility is carpal tunnel syndrome. That depends on the area of distribution of the numbness.

There are other neurological (eg MS mentioned above) and metabolic problems which can paint this picture. Get your hand examined.
The earlier the better.

First of all, your brachial plexus is one both sides and it controls all the motion in your arms. It is not accessable to your heart or lung. What is likely going on is that you're sleeping a certain way over night that is causing your arm to go numb. Another posibility is that your scalene muscles are compressing the brachial plexus on that side.

RE:
numbness in left hand, upon waking up. i wake up on my back.?
Can anybody throw any light onto why I should wake up on my back in the morning, with complete numbness of my left hand? i have not slept on it, nor am i overweight. i know that the brachial plexus nerve is situated on your left and something either heart or lung may be pressing on it, if i sleep...

you say complete numbness - including your 5th finger. If that is the case, and you are sleeping on your back, look at the elbow and see what is going on there. Ischemia is another thing that could be causing this. Carpal tunnel involves the median nerve and it affects the thumb and the first 3 fingers.
Either way, you need a doctor to help wiht sorting this out!

There are 3 possibilities, first is a pinched nerve in your neck. Second is a slowing of the ulner nerve in your elbow and third problem in the nerve in the wrist. Most likely it is the nerve in the elbow

could be carpal tunnel syndrome. do you have shooting pains in your wrist or forearm and weakness in you hand in addition to the numbness? do you do alot of repetitive motion at work or at home during the day? the symptoms of carpal tunnel are usually worse at night or early morning after the hands and arms have been relaxed for a while.

I sometimes get that but if you put your arm outside on your duvet it doesn't occur. Must be compression of the nerve. Certainly using a pillow to support the arm always works.

Two choices: poor circulation or your veins are clogged. Have that checked. Could be related to the heart also.
