Schizophrenia And Bipolar Disorder Linked

A new study reported in The Lancet (2003;362:798-805) has found a genetic link between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Researchers performed clinical studies on 15 brains affected by schizophrenia, 15 affected by bipolar disorder, and 15 with neither. Tests were performed to determine what genes are expressed in each. The research revealed similarities in the reduction of oligodendrocyte-related and myelin-related genes. The researchers also found similar expression changes to the schizophrenia group in bipolar brains, which thus lends support to the notion that the disorders share common causative and pathophysiological pathways.

yes my next door neighbor is married to a severe schizo case and they have a 3 year old son now...oh wait they just got a divorce. but i think they got a divorce over something that had nothing to do with her schizo. they just fell out like some relationships do..basically if they stay on there meds you can deal if you really want to be with them.

is the person seeing a psychiatrist and taking medication? if so, is the treatment working? people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder can lead normal occupational and social lives if their illness is successfully treated. all three illnesses have different degrees of severity tho. schizoaffective disorder is a poorly defined illness that has symptoms of both schizophrenia and major affective (mood) disorders.

i agree with your first answer...people with schizoaffective can be very sensitive...but on the right combo of meds and with the right shrink and therapist they can live a fairly normal life... most of them at least... they still may not be able to work due to paranoia or something like that... and their interpersonal effectiveness skills might leave something to be desired......

but by all means be their friend..... schizoaffectives get very lonely...

on my view , it is but you of course need to take note in mind that there will always be a time when that person will lose himself/herself, one way or another.
