There is an average of 10 new viruses that come out each WEEK. also new Trojans, Spyware, Worms, and other Malware.
Hackers find new ways to break in to Windows. Once in they can do anything they want with your computer, just is if they were sitting and using your keyboard. They can also get all the information off it. Sometimes with out your knowing, and sometimes as there deleting everything!
The second Microsoft learns of a security problem they write a patch for it and release it with the next update. If it's severe enough they will release it ASAP.
I advise Keeping it updated AND to use ALL of the following FREE protection.
Not keeping Windows and the following (or any protection software) updated is like leaving your front door open when you go on vacation. Or leaving your car running when you go in the mall shopping. Your just inviting trouble!
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Some stupid people with no life program viruses, trojans, etc. to infiltrate PCs and cause mayhem for no reason besides that they have no life.
Updating Windows repairs and patches glitches and vulnerabilites of the system and protects from unwanted "damage" to the operating system and, rarely, hardware.

If you don't update windows or any of its sub programs you could experience problems such as; media that you play or view , documents that you read may cause it to crash, not respond and it also repairs holes and beefs up your security.
