um mm... interesting.. very interesting.. ideas can be plenty but it depends that how you execute them..

What I'm thinking is very hypothetical, you can show foot prints of a kid on the surface of a water and as they move on they would change into footprints of a teenager, an adult and then an old man consequently. This would work better in an animation but since u r working in a collage, ripple effects can be shown on the last footprint which will depict that this foot print has just appeared where as previous footprints can be shown as something frozen.

This will bring out the idea, that footprints are getting bigger representing time advancement

foot prints will appear on the surface of water where Water will also be reflecting the galaxies (could be simple stars or various planets) in its depths. if it can be done in a 3d environment, blue lights will play a magical role.

Galaxies would show space apparently where as lights and shades themselves will create a feel of a space.

many many other details can be added in this as i think of it.. but story would go long so i should stop here.

all the best!

Since there are lot more factors dealing with time and space, I just share with you what I have!

Not only in Photography, but also in every Photocollage, I consider the key factor for time and space is the light!

It is the light how we recognise time! Either create it or manipulate it (using exposure controls in your camera)! Make it simple, sequencial with proper intervals! And about Space, I am not sure what kind of space you are askin' about! Coz, time, colors, shades, frames et al can create space! And I need to say photocollage itself practiced differently aroound the globe!

Try yours in your way and make it to stand out of others! All the best!!

Since you did not clear if the project has to be done by Photography only or you can do some designing works as well I suggest to draw few scales from different directions 2 or 3 maybe, with different sizes as well, blured into background. The idea of light is wonderful as given above. make the scale from light.. smoke like effect along with.

The the background, it could be something from sky high to deep space. like start with skyblue color and pushing it into deep dark with some enigma like effect.

The scale I am saying is something like this

__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__

with of course different line sizes, then you can put texts or other images over it to blend with the base. It seems fine to visualize.
