Alot of departments have summer uniform protocols, i.e. polo shirts, or even t-shirts and some even allow shorts. Although the officers i've talked to say it wouldn't make a whole lot of differance considering all the gear that can't be compromised that they have to wear every day, vest, duty belt and apporpriate foot wear. Hard to make those things cooler.

It sounds like a good idea. In the 1960s US Army they wore khaki uniforms in the summer.
Some departments do have a summer uniform policy, but many of the northern states probably don't feel like they need one. Of course with this week's record highs they may have to re-think that policy.
When police wear a uniform it is important for them to not be confused with any other law enforcement personal, or city workers. The color black and dark blue are usually reserved for the local police. In Dallas they still wear black, but they have the option of wearing shorts like UPS guys.

If they are lucky enough, they get to wear short sleeved ones in the summer!!!
Brings back FOND memories of having to IRON my dads uniforms!!! HATED doing that! Worst fabric to iron. Took HOURS to iron all his shirts & pants.
THEN when my sister & I left home, he started taking them to the dry cleaners!!! LOL WHY couldn't he have done that when we were YOUNG!!! LOL MEN?!?
